The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen submitted her government's resignation to the king on Wednesday, after her tripartite coalition suffered a significant defeat in the general elections, the royal palace announced in a statement, Reuters and the Guardian report.

In fact, the resignation of the Prime Minister of Denmark was expected after she suffered a massive electoral defeat, but she could still emerge as the leader of a new cabinet in the coming weeks.

Frederiksen's Social Democratic Party had its worst elections since 1903, winning only 38 seats in the 179-seat parliament - down from 50 four years ago - amid voter concerns about migration, a cost of living crisis, and social assistance. In total, the red bloc of left-wing parties secured 84 seats, while the blue bloc of right-wing parties obtained 77 seats. The Moderates, a small centrist party, hold 14 seats and could influence the formation of the government.

On the other hand, notes The Guardian, Mette Frederiksen's resignation, although it sounds a bit dramatic, is not: it was expected, as it initiates the process of forming a new government, especially since the outgoing tripartite government clearly does not have the necessary majority to continue functioning.

Frederiksen is expected to remain in office as interim until a new government is formed and continues to be one of the favorites to obtain the leadership position.

The parties are set to launch potentially tough and lengthy negotiations to determine whether the next government will be formed by Frederiksen or another party leader.
