The Merops system, developed in the USA, is a compact system designed for the detection and neutralization of drones, using artificial intelligence. It will be deployed in Poland, Romania, and Denmark, as part of NATO's efforts to strengthen defense on the eastern flank, in the context of threats from Russia. The necessity of this system became evident after repeated incursions of Russian drones into Polish and Romanian airspace. Merops offers precise detection of drones, being much more efficient and economical compared to fighter jets.
The system can protect both critical infrastructure and forces on the battlefield, providing commanders with enough time to assess threats. Additionally, NATO is working on developing new technologies to respond to emerging challenges in drone warfare, considering that Russia is constantly improving its capabilities. Merops represents a first phase in strengthening NATO's defense, a process that will take between two and five years, given the rapid evolution of warfare technologies.
