Thousands of students protested in Prague against the government's plan to reduce funding for public radio and television.

The protesters chanted "We will not let you take control of the media," highlighting concerns about its independence.

The new plan proposes the elimination of fees paid by citizens for access to public broadcasting, which would make the media solely dependent on the state budget, thus compromising its independence. Critics of the project argue that the current budgets of public media will be significantly reduced, and the legislation is set to be approved by the government and Parliament.

Media unions have threatened to strike if the government proceeds with these changes, which could come into effect next year. The International Press Institute has expressed concerns that these changes will weaken the financial and editorial independence of broadcasters.
