The mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karacsony, has become a suspect in a police investigation into the organization of an LGBTQ+ rights rally that was turned into an anti-government demonstration. It took place on June 28, when hundreds of thousands of protesters marched against Viktor Orban's nationalist government, which has restricted LGBTQ+ rights over the past decade. Karacsony tried to get around a recent law banning Pride marches, but police intervened, provoking a strong backlash from the opposition.
