American Secretary of State Marco Rubio will participate on Tuesday in discussions between the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon, held in Washington, according to the EFE news agency and an official from the State Department. This meeting is the first in a process through which Beirut hopes to reach a ceasefire, which could pave the way for more detailed negotiations regarding unresolved issues.
The Israeli side mainly aims at the disarmament of Hezbollah, without agreeing to a cessation of hostilities beforehand. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem criticized the discussions, considering them a "humiliation" and a harmful measure for the Lebanese government and people.
He warned that the opposition to his movement serves the interests of Israel. It is important to note that a ceasefire in Lebanon is not included in the two-week agreement reached between the United States and Iran, which complicates negotiations for a final agreement.
