Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, is in Hungary for meetings with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, where the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of civil nuclear energy is expected. Donald Trump has expressed support for Orbán in his electoral campaign, which is taking place in the context of difficult elections for the Hungarian leader. Rubio's visit follows a meeting in Slovakia and aims to strengthen energy agreements in Central Europe.

Orbán, known for his relations with the Kremlin and his nationalist policies, benefits from the support of the conservative movement in the U.S., despite criticism regarding the erosion of democracy in Hungary. Trump praised Orbán for his opposition to immigration and for his policies against LGBTQ+ rights. Orbán is seeking to attract Trump's support ahead of the elections on April 12, hoping that a visit from him could improve his electoral chances.
