Marco Rubio has congratulated the Russian people on Russia Day, reaffirming the US commitment to support their aspirations and its desire to promote a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The statement drew the displeasure of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga, who criticized the congratulations to the Russian aggressor. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov interpreted Rubio's statements as a positive change in US policy towards Russia. Russia Day is celebrated on June 12, marking the sovereignty of the Russian Federation.
