Dane Miller, a 32-year-old man from Illinois, has sued the sports betting platform DraftKings, accusing it of fueling his gambling addiction, which led to financial losses of over 2 million dollars and the loss of his job. Miller claims he opened an account on the platform in October 2020 and that, through the use of advanced analytical tools, DraftKings increased user engagement, heightening the risk of addiction.

His betting activity rapidly increased, and he was included in the VIP program, benefiting from perks that encouraged him to bet more. Miller resorted to personal loans and savings intended for his wedding to support his gambling habits, and in September 2024, he was fired due to gambling-related issues. He suffered physical and mental harm, being diagnosed with pathological gambling disorder and suicidal ideation. DraftKings has not commented on the allegations. The lawsuit joins a wave of litigation against betting operators in the U.S., who are accused of encouraging risky gambling behaviors.
