Against the backdrop of threats to academic freedoms in the US, Macron and von der Leyen are organizing the 'Choose Europe for Science' conference in Paris to attract foreign researchers. The EU is proposing a €500m package for 2025-2027 to make Europe a magnet for science. Despite lower salaries than in the US, the aim is to reach 3% of GDP for research by 2030. The initiative has sparked criticism from trade unions for underfunding the sector.
