Emmanuel Macron has proposed banning mobile phones in high schools across the country, thus extending a measure already implemented for middle school students. This reform, which will come into effect at the beginning of the next school year, is considered by the French Government as a 'digital break'.

Students will be required to hand in their phones at designated places upon arriving at school and will only be able to retrieve them after classes are over. Although phones have been banned in middle schools since 2018, students were allowed to keep them in their backpacks during class time. After a pilot program, schools reported that students interacted more and focused better in class, which led to the decision to extend the ban to high schools as well.
