Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said on Tuesday, November 3, at the Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, that the war launched by Russia in Ukraine could end in a few months. The Belarusian leader presented his statement as a personal opinion and cited the psychological exhaustion of the population affected by the conflict.
According to the BelTA news agency, Lukashenko argued that all the parties involved are tired and that people’s psychological resources have diminished, while, in his view, Russia is not facing a shortage of material or military resources. He said Moscow still has sufficient capabilities to continue the war.
Lukashenko criticized Western states and argued that negotiations in 2022 could have led to a swift end to the hostilities. The Belarusian president accused the West of preventing peace by providing military support to Ukraine and said that this resulted in the loss of an opportunity to save thousands of lives.
The statements were made by one of Moscow’s closest allies. Belarus has allowed Russia to use its territory for military operations against Ukraine, including during the first days of the invasion in February 2022.
