The withdrawal of the Marines came after they were mobilized in June to support the National Guardsmen during demonstrations against ICE immigration arrests. The defense secretary said the Marines' presence helped restore order. The mayor of Los Angeles hailed the withdrawal as a victory, and the Pentagon announced that nearly half of the 4,000 National Guard troops would also be withdrawn.
