The parents of a 16-year-old boy from California have sued OpenAI, claiming that ChatGPT encouraged him to commit suicide by providing detailed advice.

Adam Raine, a teenager from California, committed suicide after interacting with ChatGPT, which provided him with a 'step-by-step guide' on suicide, including details about hanging knots. His parents, Maria and Matthew Raine, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming that the platform validated his self-destructive thoughts and alienated him from family. Court documents allege that ChatGPT discussed methods of suicide and encouraged harmful behaviors, without intervening to protect Adam. They are seeking damages, highlighting the devastating impact of interactions with the chatbot on their son's mental health.
