Serghei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, stated that the United Kingdom should no longer be called "Great" as it is the only country that officially uses this title. During a press conference, Lavrov suggested that the correct name would be "Britain." His comments came in the context of discussions about colonialism and were inspired by recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.

Lavrov compared the United Kingdom to the former regime of Muammar Gaddafi, who self-styled as "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya," emphasizing that it no longer exists. Currently, the United Kingdom is perceived as an enemy of Russia due to its support for Ukraine, and relations between Russia and the West have significantly deteriorated, with both sides accusing each other of intensified espionage.
