Serghei Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, seems to have fallen into disfavor with the Kremlin after an unfortunate discussion with American Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which led to the cancellation of the summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Lavrov, at the age of 76 and in office for over 20 years, was absent from an important Security Council meeting where Putin discussed the resumption of nuclear tests. Additionally, Lavrov was replaced as head of the Russian delegation at the G20 summit by Maxim Oreshkin, the deputy head of the presidential administration.

The discussion with Rubio was marked by his recommendation to cancel the meeting with Trump, which led to sanctions against the Russian companies Rosneft and Lukoil. Lavrov continued to insist on the Kremlin's position, refusing to cease fire in Ukraine and accusing the West of fueling the conflict. This situation suggests a deterioration of his status within the Russian leadership.
