The bronze monument, erected in 1985, was 23 meters tall and was removed at night and moved to make way for a 95-meter Kyrgyz flag. The city of Osh stressed that this action should not be politicized and is part of a common practice to improve urban architecture. With the growing influence of China and the West, Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian countries are reinforcing their national identities, prompting reactions from Russia.
