Jeff Bezos, through his company Blue Origin, has requested the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the USA for approval to launch up to 51,600 satellites as part of the Sunrise Project, aimed at creating data centers in space. This initiative aligns with the efforts of other tech giants, such as Google and SpaceX, to move computing power requirements into space, in the context of the exponential growth of artificial intelligence.

Blue Origin claims that the project will reduce pressure on Earth's natural resources by shifting energy and water consumption into space. The project envisions a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, at an altitude between 500 and 1,800 km, and relies on TeraWave laser communication technology, planned for launch by 2027.

Although optimistic, CEO Dave Limp acknowledged the challenges related to the durability of processors in extreme environmental conditions. Recently, Nvidia announced the development of chips specifically designed for orbital data centers, highlighting the growing interest in this emerging field.
