An experimental project developed in Japan, led by designer Satoshi Nakagawa, explores the possibility of generating electricity from common materials such as soil and organic waste.
The technology, called Micropower Collection (MPC), uses electrochemical reactions to generate electric current, having potential applications for powering low-consumption equipment in remote areas or in emergency situations. Although it is in an early stage and produces small amounts of energy, the experimental system in Nakagawa's laboratory can power approximately 800 LED bulbs. Electrodes made from metals such as zinc and copper are used in combination with materials that contain water and ions, generating a continuous electric current.
The project has applications in agriculture, infrastructure, and can be useful in areas affected by natural disasters. Experts recognize the innovation but emphasize that the energy produced is inferior to conventional systems, having more of a research role.
