Japan, known for its pacifist policy, is changing its approach and expanding its arms exports to strengthen military cooperation with allies. Defense minister Gen Nakatani and prime minister Shigeru Ishiba are backing the initiative, which is based on the concept of "proactive contribution to peace". Although the Japanese defence industry has struggled, Japan hopes to revitalize its sector by increasing its budget and facilitating exports, given that in 2024 it accounted for just 0.1% of global arms exports.
