Janaf rejected Hungary's request on Friday to transport Russian oil through the Adria pipeline, as an alternative to the halted deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline from Ukraine. The company argued that it complies with the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russia, which prohibit imports of Russian oil by sea, but allow deliveries through pipelines for Hungary and Slovakia, which do not have access to the sea.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban emphasized that the main issue is the cost of Russian oil, which is cheaper than alternatives. Hungary accused Croatia of excessively high transit fees and suspended deliveries of diesel and electricity to Ukraine in retaliation. Slovakia also suspended electricity deliveries, and Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened further measures if Ukraine does not unblock the flow of Russian oil.
