Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has been temporarily released from detention to undergo surgery for an inguinal hernia, scheduled for Christmas Day. He was incarcerated at the end of November, having been sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted coup d'état.
His release was authorized by Judge Alexandre de Moraes, and Bolsonaro was transported to DF Star hospital in Brasilia, where he has previously undergone surgery. The duration of his hospitalization has not been specified, and Bolsonaro, at the age of 70, is facing aftereffects from an assassination attempt in 2018, when he was stabbed in the abdomen.
