Italy plans to release some 10,105 prisoners, 15% of the total incarcerated population, to tackle prison overcrowding, which has an occupancy rate of 122%. These prisoners, with final convictions and less than two years to serve, will be placed under house arrest or on probation, excluding those convicted of serious crimes.
