The Italian government has sent a first group of migrants to Albania as part of a plan to process asylum applications abroad. Under the agreement, migrants will be transferred to registration centers in Albania, where their asylum claims will be processed. Italy signed a similar agreement with Albania, which has been criticized by human rights NGOs.
