Adolfo Urso, the Italian Minister of Industry, has called for the suspension of the EU emissions trading system (ETS) until a thorough review, arguing that the current system represents an additional fiscal burden for European companies, affecting their competitiveness. The prices of pollution certificates have recently decreased, and Italy intends to request the European Commission to suspend the ETS market while awaiting reform proposals.
Similar criticisms have been expressed by other member states, such as Slovakia and Poland, in the context of concerns about deindustrialization. Discussions regarding the ETS will continue at the next EU leaders' summit, while Sweden maintains that the system has been effective in reducing emissions.
