Italy has decided to remove the word 'Yes!' from the national anthem, 'Il Canto degli Italiani', a change proposed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and approved by President Sergio Mattarella. This change has been communicated to the armed forces and will affect the official interpretations of the anthem, as it is considered that the final shout was inappropriate for official state events. The original lyrics, written by Goffredo Mameli in 1847, did not include 'Yes!', which was added in the musical score by Michele Novaro. The modification has sparked controversy in military circles, in the context of a cultural and psychological reluctance to fight in Italy. Additionally, a recent survey showed that the majority of Italians are not willing to risk their lives in war. The updated version of the anthem replaces 'Yes!' with instrumental music, and Meloni participated in an enthusiastic rendition of the anthem, highlighting her patriotism.
