The legislative proposal, called 'Law Against Islamic Separatism', comes in the context of a broader campaign against what the right-wing party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has described as 'cultural separatism' associated with Islam. The law would prohibit the wearing of any covering that obscures the face in all public spaces, including in shops, schools, and offices. Those who violate the ban would be subject to a fine ranging from 300 to 3,000 euros.
