The Israel Defense Forces want to expand its fight against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip. The IDF plans to fight the Hamas brigade in Rafah and disband it, as it is currently doing with Hamas battalions in the Khan Yunis area. Estimates show that over 1.3 million Palestinians live in Rafah and the surrounding area.
