<p>On November 16, 2025, Israeli military forces opened fire on UN troops in southern Lebanon, in an incident that the UN mission considered a serious violation. Although Israeli soldiers initially fired at two suspects in the El Hamames area, they later realized that these individuals were part of the UN peacekeeping forces. The Israeli army stated that it did not intend to fire on the troops, confusing them with suspects due to unfavorable weather conditions. UNIFIL reported that the fire was opened from a Merkava tank located on Lebanese territory, and the bullets fell within five meters of the UN soldiers, who were forced to take cover. The incident was considered a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which prohibits the deployment of other armed forces in southern Lebanon, except for UN troops and the Lebanese army. The Lebanese army also emphasized that violations of its sovereignty by Israel contribute to instability. Although Israel and Hezbollah agreed on a ceasefire, Israel continues to carry out airstrikes, claiming to target Hezbollah sites and operatives, while the Lebanese government accuses Israel of violating the agreement by not completing the withdrawal.
