Iraqi Kurds are facing a new regional crisis, wanting to avoid involvement in the war in Iran, after having been used in the past by external powers for purposes that were not favorable to them. Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, the wife of the Iraqi president, emphasizes that they do not want to be treated as mercenaries. Despite pressures from Washington to mobilize Kurdish groups against the Iranian regime, the Kurds in Iraq prefer to stay put, fearing repercussions.

Tensions in the region are heightened by frequent attacks on American and Kurdish bases, with reports of rockets and drones launched by Iranian militias and PMF. Although the air defense systems are functioning effectively, the Kurds in Iraq fear a civil war if they decide to get involved. In Iraqi Kurdistan, which hosts approximately 6.5 million people, there is a clear desire to avoid escalating the conflict and to remain neutral in the face of external challenges.
