The Iranian frigate sunk near Sri Lanka was hit by a torpedo fired by an American submarine, announces Pete Hegseth.

Iranian frigate IRIS Dena sank in the Indian Ocean, about 40 kilometers south of Sri Lanka, after being hit by a torpedo fired by an American submarine, according to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

He emphasized that the incident represents the first sinking of an enemy ship by an American torpedo since World War II.

There were 180 people on board the frigate, and the Sri Lankan Navy received an SOS signal and initiated a search and rescue operation. So far, bodies have been recovered from the sea and 32 crew members have been rescued and transported to the hospital.

Rescue teams continue to search for survivors, while a patch of oil left by the sunken vessel has been observed at the scene.
