Anant Ambani, the son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, announced that he wishes to save 80 hippos brought to Colombia by Pablo Escobar, which are threatened with euthanasia by the Colombian government due to uncontrolled population growth. These hippos, which currently live in the Hacienda Nápoles area, have become an invasive species, putting local ecosystems at risk. Ambani proposed relocating them to his Vantara conservation center in India, which houses over 150,000 animals.
He emphasized the human responsibility to save these animals, who did not choose the circumstances in which they live. The authorities at Vantara are prepared to collaborate with the Colombian government to analyze the proposal, which would require approvals and biosecurity measures. The Colombian government's decision to euthanize the hippos has been justified by the need to control the population of the invasive species, which could reach 500 individuals by 2030, affecting local ecosystems.
