Before important elections in India, 9.1 million voters were removed from the electoral rolls following an administrative review process. Authorities claim that the measure aims to eliminate duplicate registrations, deceased individuals, or those without voting rights, but critics argue that the decisions disproportionately affected certain groups, especially religious minorities and vulnerable communities.

Numerous voters contested the removals, but some of them did not restore their voting rights before the election. The situation has generated accusations of discrimination and possible electoral manipulation, with the opposition and civic organizations warning about the risks to the democratic process and the fairness of the elections.
