India is set to revise its legislation in the energy sector to allow new investments in the nuclear energy sector, with projects estimated to reach 19.3 trillion rupees (214 billion dollars). Minister Jitendra Singh stated that the bill could be approved by the Cabinet this week and will facilitate private sector involvement in nuclear energy production, a key objective for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aims to install 100 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2047.
Legislative changes will allow private players to actively participate in nuclear energy production, currently limited to the supply of equipment. Additionally, liability regulations will be revised to protect nuclear technology suppliers from legal processes in the event of accidents. This initiative aligns with global trends, where countries are ramping up investments in nuclear energy to meet the growing demand for clean energy. Currently, India's Kudankulam plant is the only one using foreign technology, and discussions with Russia for a new nuclear project are ongoing.
