Pakistan launched airstrikes on major cities in Afghanistan and Taliban government targets, including the capital Kabul, from Thursday to Friday, while the Pakistani defense minister stated that relations between the two countries have entered an "open war" after months of mutual confrontations.
AFP journalists reported explosions and fighter jets in Kabul and Kandahar, confirming Pakistan's military operations triggered by attacks from Afghan forces on Pakistani border troops.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated in recent months, culminating in border clashes that left over 70 dead. The Pakistani government accuses Afghan authorities of not acting against militant groups, while the Taliban deny these accusations.
The Pakistani information minister confirmed the attacks on Taliban targets, and the defense minister stated that his country is in a "total confrontation" with the Taliban government. Expert Michael Kugelman emphasized that the airstrikes represent a significant escalation of the conflict. Negotiations mediated by Qatar and Turkey have failed to bring about a lasting agreement, and Saudi Arabia has recently intervened to facilitate dialogue.
In the aftermath of the attacks, casualties were reported, including Afghan soldiers and civilians, and the Taliban announced "large-scale offensive operations" in response. Violent attacks also occurred in both countries, including suicide bombings claimed by militant groups.
