According to the Office of National Statistics, immigration has become the main factor in Austria's population growth, which has increased by 38.4% in the last decade. Today, 2.51 million residents are of immigrant origin, and the proportion has risen from 21.4% to 27.8%. Austria faces more deaths than births, and without immigration, the population could fall significantly. The population is expected to exceed 10 million by 2069, largely due to immigration.
