The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto, announced that Hungary will begin negotiations for the purchase of nuclear fuel from the United States, with the aim of diversifying its energy supply. Szijjarto, who is on a visit to Washington, emphasized the need to obtain more nuclear fuel to support the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant, which has four Russian reactors. Additionally, Hungary will continue to purchase fuel from Russia, maintaining existing relationships with Russian suppliers.
Szijjarto held meetings with officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and with Westinghouse to discuss these purchases, but did not provide details about the timing or volume of imports from the U.S. Hungary intends to extend the lifespan of the existing reactors and to expand the plant, where the Russian company Rosatom is building two new reactors. The Hungarian government also announced that it will purchase nuclear fuel from the French company Framatome starting in 2027.
