The European diploma has accused Hungary of blocking the adoption of a new package of sanctions against Russia.

Before a meeting of the EU foreign ministers, European officials expressed concerns regarding Hungary's position to block a 20th package of sanctions against Russia. The European Commission proposed this package ahead of the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, but Hungary, through its foreign minister Peter Szijarto, announced that it would use its veto power until Ukraine resumes oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline, damaged by Russian attacks. Prime Minister Viktor Orban mentioned that he would also block a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine for the same reasons.

Reactions from other foreign ministers, including those from Germany and Poland, were critical, accusing Hungary of a lack of solidarity towards Ukraine and of manipulating the situation for internal political purposes. The EU proposed sanctions targeting the banking and energy sectors, including bans on ships transporting Russian oil.
