China has received harsh criticism from several countries and international organizations after 45 activists in Hong Kong were found guilty of 'subversion' for holding an unofficial primary election. The sentences were denounced as a violation of political freedoms. Among those convicted was activist Benny Tai, who received ten years in jail, the harshest sentence under the 2020 'national security' law.
