Representatives of Hamas announced on Monday the dissolution of the administration that has governed the Gaza Strip for nearly twenty years, through the resignation of the officials of the emergency government committee. This decision marks a significant moment for the Islamist movement, which took control in 2007, following conflicts with Fatah.
In the context of the war between Israel and Hamas, triggered by the attack on October 7, 2023, Hamas has expressed its willingness to step down from power in favor of an alternative Palestinian leadership. Although various scenarios have been discussed, the situation on the ground remains stagnant, with the disarmament of Hamas as the main sticking point. The dissolution of the Hamas committee paves the way for the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), led by Ali Shaath, which could take over the daily management of the territory, although the NCAG has been blocked outside Gaza for several months.
