Guterres emphasized the importance of adhering to the first phase of the peace agreement, which came into effect on October 10. The conflict escalated dramatically on October 7, 2023, when attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 251 hostages. Israel's response was an intense military campaign in Gaza, resulting in over 68,500 deaths, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Guterres called on all parties involved to put an end to the violence.
