In the first seven months of 2025, Greece recorded an 8% increase in online transactions, reaching 40.8 billion euros, while cash usage decreased by 3 billion euros. The adopted digitalization measures, such as the interconnection of cash registers with POS systems, contributed to the increase in VAT revenues and the reduction of tax evasion. Romania, in contrast, continues to lose billions in uncollected VAT, having a deficit of 36% of its potential. Greece's example suggests that the digitalization of payments could bring similar benefits for Romania.
