Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, stated that approximately 272 Ghanaian citizens have been drawn into the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with estimates that 55 of them have been killed. This situation has also been observed in other African countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, where citizens have been enrolled in the Russian army, often ending up being captured or killed. Ablakwa made a visit to Kyiv to discuss the fate of two Ghanaian prisoners of war.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister mentioned that over 1,780 Africans from 36 countries are fighting alongside Russian forces. Ablakwa emphasized that young Ghanaians are becoming victims of manipulation by criminal networks that promise decent jobs in Russia but recruit them for war. The Ghanaian government is committed to combating these illegal recruitment networks, emphasizing that this is not their war and that they cannot allow young people to become "human shields."
