A new distribution of responsibilities within NATO will lead to an increase in the number of military command positions held by Germany, thus surpassing the United States.

This change is part of a transition towards a fairer burden-sharing within the Alliance, according to a NATO statement. European allies, including new members, will have a more significant role in military leadership, while the U.S. will maintain its commitment to NATO, continuing to hold the position of Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). The changes include the transfer of command of the Joint Forces Command from Norfolk to the United Kingdom and the Allied Joint Forces Command from Naples to Italy. Additionally, Germany and Poland will share command of the Joint Forces Command from Brunssum. In the future, all three Joint Forces Commands will be led by Europeans, under the strategic command of SACEUR. These changes will be implemented gradually, according to established personnel rotations.
