The government led by Friedrich Merz rejected the proposal of French President Emmanuel Macron to establish a common scheme for European loans, in the context of a meeting of European Union leaders scheduled for Thursday. Macron suggested the launch of eurobonds to support investments in strategic areas, emphasizing the need to maintain Europe's competitiveness against the United States and China. However, Berlin rejected the initiative shortly after Macron's interview was published, highlighting the divergences between the two leaders.

A German official stated that, although investments are necessary, they must be integrated into the Multiannual Financial Framework. Germany's decision was announced ahead of an informal meeting of European leaders in Belgium, which will discuss competitiveness, without expecting concrete decisions.
