Bastian Ernst, the new president of the Association of Reservists in Germany, has proposed a significant change in the organization of reserve forces, suggesting raising the age limit for reservists from 65 to 70 years. This proposal comes in response to the challenges faced by the German army in attracting young people, considering that many individuals remain active and healthy at advanced ages.

Ernst emphasizes that Germany cannot afford to lose the valuable experience of reservists. Furthermore, he suggests that employers should not have veto power over the participation of reservists in exercises.

This change could directly affect tens of thousands of people, given that the Bundeswehr aims for a significant increase in the number of active and reserve soldiers by 2035. Ernst also calls for better tracking of available reservists, considering that only a small portion of those who have completed military service are integrated into current planning. His proposals are supported by politicians, and the context of these changes coincides with the presentation of a new military strategy by the Minister of Defense.
