Andre Wustner, the head of the defense industry association in Germany, stated that the domestic arms industry must expand its capacity and operate 24 hours a day to prepare for a possible escalation of conflicts.
Wustner emphasized that not only Eastern European countries are rapidly strengthening their defense capabilities, but Germany also needs to act urgently. He warned that the perception that Russia would not be ready for a confrontation with NATO until 2029 is an illusion, and the danger is constantly increasing.
He also mentioned that the attitude of American President Donald Trump, combined with Europe's military weakness, has created a deterrence gap that needs to be closed. Wustner added that the situation in the Middle East, following the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, offers Putin opportunities to intensify attacks on Ukraine and the civilian population. The uncertainty among European allies could encourage Russia to also expand hybrid attacks and breach borders on NATO's eastern flank.
