The German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, stated that Germany is prepared for a possible reduction of the American military presence on its territory, in the context of recent statements by President Donald Trump.

These statements came following a dispute between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who criticized the American strategy in Iran. Trump reacted by stating that Merz "has no idea what he is talking about." Before Trump suggested a partial withdrawal of troops, American Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on the phone with Wadephul. Although tensions were evident, Chancellor Merz emphasized that relations with Trump remain "good and unchanged." In 2024, over 35,000 American soldiers were stationed in Germany, and recent estimates suggest that this number has increased to nearly 50,000.
