Germany is analyzing the possibility of acquiring F-35 fighter jets from the USA, according to Reuters sources. The discussions could lead to the purchase of over 35 additional aircraft, in the context of the stagnation of the joint program with France, the Future Combat Air System (FCAS).
In 2022, Germany ordered 35 F-35 aircraft, with delivery expected to begin in the current year. The additional purchase could mark a strategic shift, increasing dependence on American military technology and diminishing European autonomy in defense. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has questioned the necessity of developing a sixth-generation aircraft, considering the high costs. The F-35 will replace the Tornado aircraft in the role of transporting nuclear bombs in the event of a conflict.
