Wolfram Weimer, the German Minister of Culture, has called for TikTok to be placed under European control, citing the risks related to China's access to the data of EU citizens. He emphasized the need to analyze the ownership of the platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, similar to the measures taken by the United States to ensure greater control over TikTok's U.S. subsidiary.
Weimer proposed that TikTok's assets in Europe be taken over by European companies to protect user data. Additionally, he suggested introducing a 10% tax on advertising revenues for tech giants like Google and Meta, as compensation for their massive profits and influence in the European market. These measures are motivated by concerns about influencing public opinion and access to the personal data of citizens.
