The German government, through Chancellor Friedrich Merz's spokesman, has said it does not accept the European Commission's proposal to increase the EU budget, considering it unacceptable in the context of strengthening national budgets. The proposal, which includes new taxes on e-waste, tobacco and large companies, is aimed at generating funds to repay post-Covid debts. Chancellor and finance minister Lars Klingbeil stresses the need to reprioritize the EU budget and avoid additional taxes on companies, saying many proposals are unacceptable for Germany.
